ScAut – Scientific Automation

The key project “Scientific Automation” (it's OWL-ScAut) – integration of engineering findings in standard automation – aims to develop a scientific automation platform to enable real-time capable operation of technical systems with inherent part-intelligence. Future intelligent technical systems (ITS) will be:

  • adaptive: ITS interact with each other and their environment and adapt their behaviour autonomously; for example, a system might reduce its energy consumption through automatic situational adjustment
  • robust: ITS can handle unexpected situations, which the developer had not taken into account, in a dynamic environment; in the event of a sensor failure, for example, the gap would be bridged through interpolation of data from other sensors
  • anticipatory: ITS take into account specific user behaviour; a case in point is Condition Monitoring for identifying early signs of wear

The platform will be developed in cooperation with four pilot applications. The system manufacturers Hüttenhölscher Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG (Verl), IMA Klessmann GmbH timber processing systems (Lübbecke) and Schirmer Maschinen GmbH (Verl) and the kitchen manufacturer Nobilia-Werke J. Stickling GmbH & Co. KG (Verl) are involved in the cooperation. Requirements for the new automation solutions are defined, solutions are developed and tested jointly and validated in operation.

Basic technological and scientific research required for the efa project is carried out in cooperation with the University of Paderborn.
